Photo #Hammond_Robin. San engravings at Putzonderwater Outcrop, South Africa. I spent time in South Africa with Dr Brenna Henn of Stony Brook University for the #NatGeo special issue on race out this month. Dr Henn’s work on the genetic diversity of the KhoeSan corroborates archaeological evidence pointing to southern Africa as the origins of modern humans. In this issue we report on the origins of scientific racism and how it has defined society as we know it. #IDefineMe . I’ll be sharing more images from my feature I shot on genetics and race at #Hammond_Robin

Photo by #BrianSkerry. For all of the Eagles fans out there, a Steller’s Sea Eagle flies over pack ice in Japan’s Sea of Okhotsk. This species migrates from the Kamchatka Peninsula in winter to feed on the abundant herring population that gathers beneath the sea ice. These gorgeous birds are categorized as vulnerable by the IUCN but, in Japan, they are protected as a ‘National Treasure.’ Through conservation efforts like this, we can reverse our impact on the environment, and protect our world for future generations. Photo by Fritz Hoffmann #fritzphotos on assignment for National Geographic magazine. Tibetan itinerant worker, Zhou Ma 27, picks goji berries during the August harvest in Qinghai, China. Goji berries, often called wolfberries in the west, are purported to have health benefits and are commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine. While living in China I learned that gojis are good for the eyes. As a photographer, I appreciated that possibility and added a few goji berries regularly to my green tea. Today, goji berries can be found worldwide in food markets and even common grocery stores. Native to specific arid lands, such as Ningxia, China, large goji farms, like the one in Qinghai province where I made this picture, have been planted to supply the growing demand for the berries. The berries grow large and plump in Qinghai, which can be good for goji juice. But the efficacy of those grown there is said to be less than gojis grown in native soil and climate. Most gojis grown in China are shipped to Ningxia and sold wholesale from there so that the name of the place of origin can be included with the sale. #gojiberries #wolfberries #harvest #Qinghai #China #Tibetan

Photo by #paleyphoto (Matthieu Paley). Hot springs are precious in this valley in Afghanistan, on the border with China, Tajikistan and Pakistan. What a gift to have hot water year round in such a remote mountain region! Ato Mohammed and his dad agreed to be photographed, shortly before walking back home, down the valley to their village. Swipe right for a portrait of Ato and his red hair and freckles. Looking at this Irish looking boy near the border with China, I find it fascinating to consider the implications on human migration. Think of our history, of all the ancient paths that have been taken to reach every corner of the earth, all the drama and excitement that must have taken place (and still is taking place!). For more interesting cultural encounters, please visit #paleyphoto - from a recent #natgeo assignment walking across Afghanistan with the amazing and humbling #outofedenwalk #redhair #afghanistan

Photo by #lucasfogliaphoto. Kenzie hangs from her safety rope inside the Vaughan Lewis Glacier. Every summer since 1946, members of the #juneauicefieldresearchprogram have traversed the Juneau Icefield, contributing to the oldest continual study of a glacier in the Western Hemisphere. The Juneau Icefield in southeast Alaska is one of the largest ice fields in the world, covering more than 1,500 square miles. It is expected to completely disappear by 2200, if climate-warming trends continue.

Photographed on assignment by #ciriljazbec for the current issue of National Geographic Magazine. The desire to teach their children about computers drew these Samburu women to a classroom in a settlement north of Nairobi. They are learning about tablets—designed to withstand tough use—that connect to the Internet through a satellite and come preloaded with educational programs. Technology now has arrived in isolated regions of Africa primarily in the form of relatively inexpensive cell phones. This photo was also featured by the magazine’s photo editors in the best #natgeo photos of 2017. Photo by #mmuheisen (Muhammed Muheisen) Unaccompanied refugee minors from Afghanistan sleep on the ground of an abandoned warehouse where they and other refugees took refuge in Belgrade, Serbia. Border clampdowns since March 2016 and the tightening of the so-called Balkan route into the EU have stranded thousands of refugees in Serbia. Photo: #andy_mann // Starting up a steep unclimbed face in a remote valley of eastern Greenland, #ethan_pringle ascends up an endless wall of granite with #natgeo #explorer #mikelibecki and photographer #ladzinski shortly behind. After nearly a month of effort we were able to establish a new route to the summit of this beautiful peak. Expeditions like this bring out the best in everyone involved and redefine what it means to work as a selfless team. Things are changing rapidly in this region. Several years ago we visited this same area and the tongue glacier you see up-valley used to touch the lake. // Check out #andy_mann for more from this expedition to Thor’s Land, Greenland.

Photo by #mattiasklumofficial Two elephants quenching their thirst near Abu Camp, Botswana. Here they are relatively safe but more than 100 000 elephants have been killed in Africa the last 3 years! In fact every 15 minutes an elephant is killed for its tusks and most countries in Africa don't have adequate capacity to protect their herds. Please go to #mattiasklumofficial to meet a dethroned lion king. China has announced a ban on all ivory trade and processing activities by the end of 2017. Let's hope it's a game-changer for the future of elephants. China has the biggest ivory market in the world - some estimates suggest 70% of the world's trade ends up there! Help save the elephants by supporting conservation organizations! #elephants #africa #botswana #conservation #protectbiodiversity #stoppoaching #mattiasklum #natgeo #alexandrovklumofficial #thephotosociety
